"A pessimist is one who feels bad when he feels good for fear he'll feel worse when he feels better." – Anonymous

"A pessimist? A  man who thinks everybody is as nasty as himself and hates them for it." – George Bernard Shaw

No one really likes a pessimist except, perhaps a strong and incurable optimist. That is because the optimist sees some redeeming potential in the pessimist and oozes an abiding hope for change in every human heart.

A pessimist will never make a pessimist an optimist, but constant exposure to optimism will either cause the shell of darkness to crack around the pessimist or irritate him into utter silence.

It is a hard task to remain optimistic in a room full of "Gloomy Glens" and "Glum Glendas," but it is your only hope of rising above the sewage of their negativity.

In the end, you will be proven right – not because bad things will not happen, not because you are less pragmatic and realistic, and not because you will avoid all pain. Rather, it will be because you will dig your way out of the quagmire armed only with the deep belief that it can be done.

This difference between a pessimist and an optimist has much to do with the capacity to believe beyond what is obvious.
