A Pre-Father's Day Preparation

and daily advice

I know Father's Day is a few weeks off, but you may be shopping …

And preachers, while Mother's Day texts are hard to find, fresh ideas from Father's Day are not easy either.

Gift-giving is always a challenge. If your heart is set on giving Dad a tie, the one above is only $125!

"Cut from the finest silk and hand sewn at our North Carolina factory, more than a hundred stitches create the lifeline of the tie, giving it the perfect drape while allowing the fabric to move and relax. This enables the tie to be worn all day and return to its original shape."

"Hand sewn labels, loops and bar tacks are added before the tie is lightly steamed and shaped by hand. The result is a tie with it’s own unique personality; no two are exactly the same and that’s just the way we like it."

Perhaps my idea will sound a little more promising now.

Proverbs 4:1- Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.

What does your Father want more than anything else for Father’s Day?

Ties are nice. Lunch with the whole family is also pleasant. Cards are always welcome.

All of these things can warm a father’s heart, but nothing compares to the joy of knowing that you have somehow gotten through to your children and that they have applied some of the life lessons you taught in such a way as to make their lives happier, healthier, and holier.

Most fathers have had the opposite experience at least somewhere along the line, feeling that their words have encountered dead ears and contemptuous hearts. Most have seen the all-knowing sneer of a son or daughter staring back with incredulity during a heartfelt lecture on life, morality, or common sense.

Rare is the moment when a Dad senses that he has really made sense, that his words have gone to the heart and will, at least, be considered and possibly applied. It is in those moments that he receives the greatest father’s Day gift of all.

Your father has something to say to you – no matter how young or old you are. He is going to go out on a limb and risk your ridicule for several reasons.

In the first place, he loves you and wants what is best for you.

In the second place, he knows a few things that you don’t know.

In the third place, it kills him inside to think that you will have to make the same ignorant mistakes that he made and he wants to spare you.

It is true that not all people have been blessed with wise, kind, and positive natural, earthly fathers, but there are older men who can become surrogate fathers, mentors, and guides. You must seek and honor them for they have much to give and a willingness to give it.

So, forget the tie – or get it anyway, but give your father the best gift of all. Listen to him and take his words to heart. He may not be perfect, but he has a few things to say.

And if you are wondering about me … I have acquired three shirts that use cuff-links.  That would be a pretty good idea!
