“…If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed…” – from Matthew 17:20
How much faith do you have? Is your faith great or small? Is it conditional or absolute? Is it fickle or firm?
It is not an easy task to measure faith, and Jesus makes it more difficult by holding up something very small as capable of performing a task that no human has ever performed. There is much room for growth in the faith of the most devout and consecrated among us. Our faith will help us determine whether we are called to move mountains or just people. The lesson is simple: faith is a powerful force and even a little goes a long way. Our generation is familiar with the potential of very small things. Let us turn our attention toward the potential that we have as we grow in faith and exercise faith in our worship today. We serve and worship a great God and His power is far greater than we can imagine.
I pastured a church whose empty lot was covered in mustard. People came every spring and picked the greens. Year after year, the seeds replanted themselves into the waiting ground and brought forth fruit. The winter rains watered them. We did nothing but admire their resilience.
Jesus is teaching us to take the faith we have and exercise it. We are not to bemoan what we lack, but to walk in what we have. In the end, it is all about Him and not at all about us.
