"Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding."  – Job 38:4

Has God ever asked you a really hard question? It is His turn to ask. Sometimes, the questions are the answers. In this case, it becomes clear to Job what he knew from the beginning – but only theoretically. It is about to get personal.

We never really begin to know God until we are overwhelmed with how little we can truly know about Him. If He is not incomprehensible, He is not knowable. We know Him because He chooses to reveal Himself. We come face to face with Him because He reaches out to us.

The God we serve is beyond our capacity for understanding. He is greater than we can comprehend or describe. He is in a class all by Himself.

God implies that Job doesn't have enough information to even ask the right questions.

Job is being humbled. He is seeing God for the first time and He is awestruck. The kids have a word for it: WOW! Spell it this way: W-Wonder, O-Overwhelming, W-Worship.

First we experience wonder, amazement, and even bewilderment as we come to realize how great our God is.

Then we are overwhelmed. His presence sweeps over us and we are enveloped by His glory.

Finally, we fall down and worship the One True God who alone is worthy of our worship.

One rather crude brother once put it this way to me, "Pastor," said, "I've come to realize two things in this life. The first is that there is a God. The second is that I am not Him."

In the fullness of time, when men's hearts had grown cold and their vision of God had faded, He sent His only Son.

The world had come to take God for granted and consigned Him to the world of concepts and theories. Some had even assumed that He could be handled like a formula or understood through scholarship.

So, God wrapped Himself in human flesh and walked among us and everywhere Jesus went people were amazed. He fit in no one's boxes and could not be defined. And Jesus went about answering people's trivial questions with hard questions that left them scratching their heads. Yet, His message was very simple with regard to understanding:

"I am the truth," and  "Follow me."

"And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?" – Matthew 12:23
