Jesus was moved to compassion because the people were:

(1) Harassed

(2)Helpless,

(3) Left without leadership (sheep without shepherd).

As heartbreaking as it was, He saw it as an opportunity to cast a vision of harvest and call for laborers.

Context suggests how we understand & address the three areas of need help define our mission in the world as Jesus followers. For those with a missional heartbeat, He issues a call to prayer for the laborers. There is no lack of opportunity; there is a sad lack of opportunists.

In what ways are people harassed and helpless in the world today? There are internal and external forces at work beating people down and beating them from within.

The Good Shepherd has a message of liberation and fulfillment and messengers who lead must change.
