Wings of the mourning

“If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea…” – Psalm 139:9

There are things that have wings.

There is a quality of life that sings.

There is the bell tower of the morning that regularly rings.

And all of the cosmos brings its praise to the feet of the King of Kings!

Birds and butterflies and 747 jet planes all have wings. They flutter and fly and we suppose they have an advantage over us in our limited mobility.

We sometimes wish we could fly.

We sit by our windows and watch the winged things hover and fly and we think, “How free!”

How utterly and completely carefree!

Life can be troubling and burdensome. It can hem us in. Its pressures can overwhelm, us and bring us to our knees in despair. Dark clouds may gather over our souls. We may long for escape.

At other times, we may think we might want to escape from God and fool ourselves into thinking we can. Maybe it is our sin. Maybe it is our selfish ambition. Maybe it is our pride or some resentment to which we desperately cling.

We try to run away and hide.

But even if we take the wings of the morning, we cannot hide.

We simply cannot hide from God.

Wherever we go, God is there.

Whether that comes to us as good news or bad news depends upon our attitudes and our relationship with Him. If we want to hide, though it reflects an ignorance of who He is and what He desires for us, we will find ourselves frustrated and our wings clipped.

If we understand His grace and love, we are comforted in the knowledge that He is always everywhere and wherever the wind takes us, He is there.

And then, we truly sprout wings and fly.

Then, we grow wings and soar.
