Agony in the Garden by El Greco
Jesus did not ask for things very often for himself. When he did, he did not ask for much.
This one night, he wanted a balance of privacy and company.
Would the disciples please stay awake, alert, and in prayer.
It was not a good night to be alone, not even with God.There were many ways they could not stay awake. Their eyes were so heavy.
I can relate to that part … and every part.
Their hearts were heavy with the solemn mood of the evening and the dire predictions of Jesus.
Their minds were heavy, burdened with confusing words and ideas.
I have been sometimes been physically up all night preparing for medical tests requiring me to be sleep-deprived.
I am sure there are multiple lessons to learn from the experience.
I have worked all night at my desk or on a security assignment.
I wish I could say I had spent the whole night watching in prayer with Jesus.
That would have been a plan!
It still is.
Jesus said their spirits were willing, but that they had weak flesh.
That night, he struggled alone and found his strength in God alone.
That night, he was betrayed and all were scattered.
That night, he won a major victory within himself and paved the way for all sleepers to be awakened.
" And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him." – Mark 14:40 (ESV)
