International tragedy
International tragedy

Tragedy Is Always International

On March 10, 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed on a flight to Nairobi, Kenya. All 157 members of the crew and passengers died.

One might say, "That was over there. It does not impact me."

But, the 149 passengers had 35 different nationalities. 8 were from the united States.

22 passengers were affiliated with the United Nations.

All human tragedy is international tragedy. it knows no borders or boundaries, no hue, no ideology, no affiliation. It is human.

For Whom the Bell Tolls by John Donne

"No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee."

9-11-2001 struck the soul of America and sent shock waves around the planet. In nations around the world, the shrapnel of personal grief cut the hearts of people impacted by loss.

It was international.

It is always international.

Empathy is an allusive and illusive emotion until is becomes an informed decision.

The choice to care, grieve, pray, an act is both laudable and logical.

Without empathy, we will perish because all tragedy is international whether it is in Ethiopia, Ukraine, or New York City.
