Psalm 133:3 – As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
I have seen Mount Hermon and it is impressive. I could not gaze upon it without a sense of wonder and an appreciation for God’s blessings.
Dew seems thirst quenching. We don’t really drink it, but we could if we had nothing else. It points to a promise of water in abundance.
Mount Hermon was a great source of water. In fact, it was and is Israel’s main source of water. To speak of the dew of Mount Hermon is to speak of life-giving water.
It is actually a mountain cluster at the southern end of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range. Its summit straddles the border between Syria and Lebanon at 9,232 feet above sea level.
It is one of the greatest geographic resources of the area capturing much precipitation in a very dry area of the world.
Mount Hermon experiences seasonal winter and spring snow falls, which cover all three of its peaks for most of the year. Water melts and flows down the mountain eventually flowing into the Jordan River. Where the water flows, vegetation grows.
So universal was the perception of Hermon as a holy place and source of life, that it attracted much mythology, speculation, and religious practice. It was the location of pagan religious altars. Various ancient temples can be found along the slopes of Mount Hermon.
Mount Hermon's name seems related to the Semitic root “hrm”, which means "taboo" or "consecrated."
The psalmist knew that in spite of distortions, false deities, and misdirected devotion, this mountain was a sign of God’s presence among and care for His people. So he connects it to God’s blessing of life itself.
Where do you see God’s presence and blessings around you? God is not a rock, a tree, or a mountain, but God made every rock, tree, and mountain and He speaks through them. He is present in all things to make His truth and love known to us.
The God who provides dew on Hermon, provides freshness to your life daily.
