Such a sweet. talented soul, who always brought a smile to my face.
It was in drama class, under the direction of a great acting teacher and actor, John Witt.
We were reenacting the park bench scene from Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In.
A very lovely fellow student was playing Ruth's part, and I was the "dirty old man."
John was trying hard to have us get in touch with our true feelings and practice "The Method" in the spirit of Stanislavsky.
Clearly, we were not getting it.
My acting partner was not putting her heart in the slap across my face, and I was not flinching as one wounded in body and soul.
John kept telling her to slap harder and she kept trying.
Finally, she did so, wholeheartedly and forcefully. She flung herself into the moment, fully motivated, in touch with her inner rage. One slap with great force.
I was floored. I mean, I was literally floored. She knocked me off the bench and I saw stars.
I learned more about acting in that one slap than from any other lesson.
The best acting happens when you are not acting.
Be you.
I think Ruth Buzzy did that.
She was a treasure to the world, and I am still smiling as I think of her.
