Pause at the Table with Jesus
“For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.” I Corinthians 11:26
I deeply regret every time I have ever wasted a moment of reflection at the table of grace. I lament the occasions where the Lord’s Supper was an addendum to worship or an empty ritual. I repent of the times when I came as an empty man to an empty ritual.
I rejoice for every time I came empty and was refreshed by the cup and nurtured by the bread.
We come very empty, very needy, very grateful for mercy and grace. We come from a world of trouble and to a world of trouble we shall return. Having paused here and met with Jesus for a moment, we are ready for the moments to come.
He desired to by with His disciples for the Passover. He tapped in to a desire that they did not even recognize in themselves … a desire beyond desire …. a need.
We come needy and we leave ready for what shall come next. We have been reminded of the body and blood of Jesus. We have partaken on His mercy and grace.
We have been fed and we have been refreshed.
Mounds of trouble in the world …
Mountains of turmoil …
Soil of fear …
Toil of tears …
But my soul can be still,
Sided with by the One who walks beside.
When I cried, He heard.
When I sighed, He spoke the Word.
Nothing has changed.
I am not shaken.
I come to the table of grace.
These are days of grace. “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.” I Corinthians 11:23-26
