Everlasting Love

“The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.” – Jeremiah 31:3

Eternal Lover of our souls,

God of Light,

In Whom there is no darkness,

We come to catch a glimpse of Thy love.

And as we gaze, the face of Jesus takes shape before our eyes.
We behold His smile.

We behold His tears.

We glance upon His nail scarred hands.

We stand in awe.

And then we know what love is.

We know Who love is.

Our hearts are stirred with the reality.

We understand that we do not understand.

We comprehend that we cannot comprehend.

Our jaws drop in wonder.

And we pray, God, our Father,

For another glimpse and then another.

We pray that our own love for those we love

And those we do not yet love

To grow and form and conform

To the love we see in Thee.

I offer a very rough version of a favorite hymn. I made it for my mother as she was living out the last days of her life and she listened daily.

Let us seek the love that is the foundation of all love. Let us embrace the love of God, an everlasting love. Let us ask God to allow His love flow through us to others.

Love divine, all loves excelling,

Joy of heav’n, to earth come down,

Fix in us Thy humble dwelling;

All Thy faithful mercies crown.

Jesus, Thou art all compassion;

Pure, unbounded love Thou art;

Visit us with Thy salvation;

Enter ev’ry trembling heart.

(Charles Wesley)

Let us receive the love of God. Then, let us live in that love and practice that love. We cannot love God without loving others. It is the greatest of all expressions of our love for God.
