Why Temptation Is Not Failure
Temptation is often misunderstood. Many assume it signals failure or weak faith. Scripture offers a more nuanced—and hopeful—view.
In Matthew 4, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted. This moment is not a detour from his calling, but part of his preparation. Hebrews later reflects on this, reminding us that Jesus was tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.
Here are three helpful takeaways:
- Temptation is not sin
It is the context in which obedience and trust are clarified. - The wilderness is formative
Difficult seasons often shape identity more deeply than comfortable ones. - Faithfulness precedes relief
In the gospel story, angels minister to Jesus after resistance, not before.
