“And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.”
— Genesis 35:15
There are moments in life that become spiritual landmarks.
Places where something changed.
Where clarity appeared.
Where we sensed that God was speaking into our lives.
The Bible tells us that Jacob had such a place.
He called it Bethel.
The name comes from two Hebrew words:
Beth — house
El — God
Bethel literally means “House of God.”
For Jacob, Bethel was more than a geographic location. It was the place where heaven seemed near and where God interrupted the direction of his life.
Centuries later, hymn writer B. B. McKinney captured that longing in a well-loved hymn:
Back to Bethel I must go,
Back where the rivers of sweet water flow,
Back to the true life my soul longs to know,
Bethel is calling, and I must go.
Many believers have a Bethel somewhere in their story.
Perhaps it was:
- a small church in your childhood
- a youth retreat
- a campus Bible study
- a Christian coffee house
- a conversation with a friend
- a quiet moment when the truth of the Gospel suddenly became real
Bethel is the place where God’s story intersects with our story.
But life moves forward.
Responsibilities accumulate.
Faith sometimes becomes routine.
The clarity of those early moments fades under the noise of daily life.
And occasionally the Spirit whispers:
“Back to Bethel.”
Not because we want to live in the past.
But because remembering where God first spoke can help us rediscover direction for the future.
Sometimes we need renewal.
Sometimes redirection.
Sometimes a radical reorientation.
Returning to Bethel is not really going backward.
It is a step that allows us to move forward again.
Three Questions for Reflection
A — Awakening
What awakened in you at your Bethel?
What truth about God first became real there?
B — Burden
What commitment or calling did you sense in that moment?
C — Course Correction
What might it mean for you today to return to Bethel in your heart and renew that direction?

A Prayer
Lord,
Remind us of the places where you first spoke to us.
Renew the clarity we once had.
Restore the love we once felt.
And guide us forward in faith as we remember our Bethel.
Amen.
