“Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.” – Psalm 107:6
It gets pretty rough for folks sometimes. There is an old spiritual that expresses the twin emotions of helplessness and hope for the one who is trusting the Lord.
“Sometimes I feel discouraged and think my work’s in vain, but then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again. There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole. There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.”
The psalmist describes the redeemed of the Lord when he says that they cried to Him in the midst of distress and trouble and received His answer of deliverance.
Sometimes the trials we face are greater than our capacity to cope. Our strength is no match for our troubles. We don’t have the resources within us to meet our challenges. We are depleted, discouraged, and distressed.
There is a common misconception about scripture that God will never give us more than we can bear. He does give us more than we can bear … more than we can bear alone.
It is based on a truth, but, more accurately, the promise is that God will not test us with temptation beyond our ability to bear it by escaping from it. (See I Corinthians 10:12-13).
In other words, the only way out of some distress is divine deliverance. God will allow us to come into situations where we must cry out the prayer of Psalm 107:6 and call to Him for help. He will lead us into places where He will be our only hope.
When He does; He is … and He will be faithful to deliver.
Call upon Him.
