The prophet Micah seems almost surprised at the end of chapter seven.

“Who is a God like you?”

It is as if he has taken a windshield survey of every god worshiped in his vicinity, every god he has heard about in the wider world, every object of devotion and fear and sacrifice, and he comes back with this conclusion:

There is none like You.

You are unique.

You are different.

You stand alone.

And how does God stand alone?

Micah says:

You pardon sin.
You forgive the transgression of the remnant of Your inheritance.
You do not stay angry forever.
You delight to show mercy.
You will again have compassion.
You will tread our sins underfoot.
You will hurl our iniquities into the depths of the sea.
You remain faithful to Jacob.
You show steadfast love to Abraham.
You keep the oath You pledged to our ancestors.

This is a God like no other.

No wonder the commandments teach us:

“You shall have no other gods before me.”

Why would we want another kind of God?

This God is unique in all the right ways.

He is holy, but He is merciful.
He is just, but He is compassionate.
He sees sin clearly, yet He delights to forgive.
He remembers His covenant even when His people forget their calling.

Who is a God like this?

There is no one.

Amen.
