“He stood, and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting.”

The nations of the earth sometimes suffer under a grand delusion—the delusion of absolute sovereignty, permanence, and omnipotence.

It is a delusion because these qualities belong absolutely to the Sovereign of the universe. He can drive nations and potentates asunder, scatter “everlasting” mountains, cause perpetual hills to bow, and establish Himself as the only eternal and all-powerful Lord of all.

God stands.

God stands and measures. He measures the earth and everything within it. God alone can judge the righteousness of any nation, the integrity of any leader, and the justice of any cause. God alone can measure both the universe around us and the human heart within us.

He is the righteous and true Judge of all things.

The moment any power begins to think of itself as indestructible, God has the capacity to bring that power to nothing. He has done it before. He is doing it now. He will do it again.

Nations become prideful, haughty, greedy, self-righteous, and oppressive toward other peoples. At times, God has dealt with them by allowing one oppressive power to overcome another. Yet no oppressor escapes His ultimate judgment. Nations rise, nations fall, and God remains.

On the last day, He will judge the nations by how they treated the least of Jesus’ brothers and sisters. On that day, we, as Americans, must ask whether our nation will be counted among the sheep or the goats.

Lambs may not seem strong, but the Lion-Lamb shall reign forever in strength and compassion.

God, grant that we, as a people, will remain humble, compassionate, and gentle. May we practice corporate righteousness and work for justice and truth among the nations. May we never become so prideful that we believe we cannot be humbled or toppled by the Sovereign Lord of creation.
